General Introduction

The School of Physical Education and Sports originated from the National Jiangxi Normal Sports College which was established in 1936. Since then, the school has gone through several significant transformations during its 80 years’ history. Now as one of the earliest sports schools in China, the School of Physical Education and Sports of Jiangxi Normal University has a relatively large organization and advanced conditions throughout the whole country.

The school includes 5 departments, 1 faculty and 1 institute: the Physical Education Department, the Sports Training Department, the Traditional Sports Department, the Social Sport Department, the Sports Performance Department, the College Sports Faculty and Sport Science Institute. We also host a key lab of the General Administration of Sports of China, a sports culture research base of the General Administration of Sports of China, a national social sport instructors training base of the General Administration of Sports of China, a national aerobics training center for adolescents, the Traditional Sports Teacher Training Base of Jiangxi Province, the Demonstration Centre of Experiment Teaching in Universities in Jiangxi Province and other provincial and national centers of teaching and research. The school has 5 undergraduate programmes including Physical Education (provincial brand), Sports Training, Traditional Sports, Social Sport and Sports Performance. There are 1,600 full-time undergraduates and about 200 correspondence students. The school provides a Master’s program of Sport Science, which is the only case in the province. The Master’s program is academic, applied oriented and can be both full-time and part-time. There are about 200 postgraduates in total.

 

The school has a strong faculty which has yielded substantive research results. The faculty is composed of 130 staff, among which there are 108 full-time teachers. Among 108 teachers, there are 18 professors, 60 associate professors; 44 are supervisors for Master students and more than 55% teachers have Master’s degree, more than 17% has PhD. 1 teacher has the honor of Renowned Teacher of Jiangxi Province, 4 teachers are granted the Young Disciplinary Leading Figure of Jiangxi Province, 1 is conferred the Young Backbone Teacher of Jiangxi Province. In the past 5 years, staff of the school has published more than 30 monographs and textbooks and 380 articles on provincial, national and international key journals, chaired more than 80 provincial research programmes (including 7 National Social Science Foundation Programmes, and 20 programmes of the General Administration of Sports of China), and won over 100 provincial research prizes.

 

Based on our strength and objectives, the school has made fruitful explorations in personnel training for competitive sports. In recent years, we have trained more than 50 Olympic gold medalists as well as world, Asian and national champions like Yang Wenjun, Jin Ziwei, Gao You, Wu Yulan, Li Rongxiang, Ouyang Kunpeng, Lao Yi, Ni Zhenhua, Ao Jinping, Shou Wenchao and Guo Jiafeng. Since its establishment, the school has cultivated and sent over 10,000 graduates to all over China, and hence has become an important base of personnel training for competitive sports, physical education, social sport and sport science research in Jiangxi Province.

 

Physical Education (Undergraduate)

The programme of Physical Education can be dated back to the specialized training classes of the National Jiangxi Normal Sports College which was established in 1936. In 2002, Physical Education was named as Brand Discipline of Jiangxi Province. Now as one of the earliest disciplines in China, Physical Education has a relatively large organization and advanced conditions throughout the whole country, and with more than 6,000 graduates so far.

 

Objectives:

This programme aims to foster those students who will master essential theories, knowledge and skills of physical education. They will be trained as qualified physical educators who are proficient in one or more sports, and are able to teach in secondary schools and manage extracurricular sports activities, trainings and competitions for students. They will also be excellent graduates who manage to carry out scientific research on physical education, supervise physical education activities inside and outside school.

 

Fulfillment by the Students:

1. The students should understand the connotations of Marxism, Leninism, Maoism and thoughts of China’s major political leaders; should be familiar with the policies, strategies and regulations of (physical) education in China; should be with commitment in education career.

2. The students should master the fundamental theories and methods of physical education in schools, health education, sports training and competitions; should have the spirit of innovating and abilities of execution, self-learning and socialization.

3. The students should be aware of the trends of reformations and developments in physical education and sport sciences; should master basic research methods and should conduct scientific research in sport studies.

4. The students should master a foreign langue and computer langue; should be able to understand the literatures written in foreign languages, and command a computer; should pass CET-4 and NCRE-2.

5. The students should be healthy with a strong body, appropriate hygienic habit and living style.

6. The students should cultivate a sense of aesthetics.

 

Disciplinary Orientations:

The disciplinary orientations of Physical Education include football, basketball, volleyball, track and field, gymnastics, martial arts, aerobics, sports dances, etc.

 

Curricular Modules:

There are two modules, general and major, in Physical Education, including five categories of course: general compulsory courses, general optional courses, disciplinary elementary courses, major compulsory courses and major optional courses. Among a wide range of courses, Principles of Sport Studies, Sport Anatomy, Sport Physiology, Sport Psychology, Basics of Track and Field, Basics of Ball Games, Basics of Gymnastics, Basics of Ball Martial Arts are the key courses in Physical Education.

 

Staff:

Besides the strong faculty of the school, 24 teachers including 8 professors and 4 PhDs are working solely for the programme of Physical Education.

 

Career Prospect:

The graduates of Physical Education will be conferred a Bachelor’s degree. After four years’ full-time study, the students will master the essential theories, knowledge and skills of physical education, as well as the ability of managing sports activities inside and outside school. Therefore, the graduates may work as physical educators, trainers or researchers in the educational system, or as managers or instructors in the governmental system or sports clubs.

 

Management of Social Sport (Undergraduate)

The programme of Management of Social Sport in Jiangxi Normal University was launched in 2001. Over the past decade, this programme has formed its shape.

 

Objectives:

This programme aims to foster those students who will have profound knowledge, favorable personality and morality. They will have outstanding ability of execution, innovation spirit and occupational qualities. Moreover, they will master essential theories in managing social sport and excellent physical skills, and will be qualified to work in gyms or other recreational sectors.

Fulfillment by the Students:

1. The students should be in pursuit of appropriate values in life; love the motherland, observe disciplines and obey laws; should be honesty and trustworthy and have favorable professional ethics and artistic appreciation.

2. The students should be critical in thinking and be surefooted in scientific research; should be able to analyze and solve problems in the area of social sport with scientific research methods.

3. The students should master at least two types of physical skills in recreational sports or fitness training; should also be able to teach these skills to different cohorts; should be able to work in the social sectors of sport management.

4. The students should master a foreign langue and computer langue; should be able to understand the literatures written in foreign languages, and should command a computer; should pass the College students’ English Application Ability Test (Band A) and NCRE-1.

5. The students should obtain relevant professional certificates.

 

Disciplinary Orientations:

The graduates within this discipline are application-oriented, they will have profound knowledge theoretically and have proficient physical skills practically. In general, the graduates work in sports and fitness clubs, governmental and non-governmental sports organizations, enterprises. Some of them are working in marketing position and within the educational system.

 

Curricular Modules:

All of the courses in Management of Social Sport is strongly linked to social demand.

1. The general compulsory courses are designated by the university.

2. The major compulsory courses are key to the discipline, which are essential, applicable and perspective.

3. The optional courses including sports that are popular among the mass, such as roller, aerobics, spinning and billiards.

4. Various chances of internship with many fitness clubs in Nanchang City are also provided to the students. They may even gain a job in those clubs after graduation.

 

Staff:

The strong faculty of Management of Social Sport includes 1 professor, 5 associate professors, 3 lectures and 4 PhDs, 2 Masters and 3 Bachelors. Most of them are under 40 years old. We have chaired 3 national research funds and more than 10 ministrial or provincial research funds.

 

Career Prospect:

At present, the graduates of Management of Social Sport have a good career prospect. The can work as teachers in the primary and secondary schools, or as coaches in sports and fitness clubs, or even self-employed.

Although we have put great effort in disciplinary reformation for the programme, there are still much work for us to do. We will stand on the provincial and national market, and target the demand of the society, so as to advance our discipline, and make Management of Social Sport a renowned brand in the future.

 

Sports Training (Undergraduate)

The programme of Sports Training in Jiangxi Normal University was established in 2004. A good number of notable graduates has been produced during the past decade, such as Olympic gold medalist Yang Wenjun, Jin Ziwei and Asian champion Lao Yi. Now we recruit students throughout the countries, and have developed our own features in educating our students.

 

Programme Orientations:

Sports Training is a sub-discipline under education, which aims to foster application-oriented students in sports training. The graduates will be able to work in the areas of physical education, sport management and social sport. We stand on sports training’s demand at grassroot level and extracurricular demand in schools. We attach importance to cultivate our student to master scientific training methods, as well as favorable personality and morality.

 

Objectives:

The programme of Sports Training aims to foster those who are called for by the political, economic, cultural and technical development of the society. They will be favorable person, and are competent in sports training, sports competitions organization, physical education management and social sport instruction.

 

Fulfillment by the Students:

1. The students should uphold the Communist Party and socialist building; and should master the principles of Marxism and Leninism, love the motherland and Chinese nation and their career.

2. The students should have the sense and ability of lifelong learning; should be able to target and obtain knowledge and information; should obtain relevant certificates on foreign languages and computer.

3. The students should master essential knowledge and skills in sports training; should be able to work as teachers and managers in grassroot-level sports training bases.

4. The students should have the spirit and ability of innovation, and should be able to carry out scientific researchers.

5. The students should be good at social networking and self-adapted to the society.

6. The students should keep a strong body, and master certain military theories and skills.

 

Disciplinary Orientations:

The graduates of Sports Training will be conferred a Bachelor’s degree of Education. The disciplinary orientations of this programme includes track and field, basketball, volleyball, football, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming, rowing, gymnastics, etc. Both theories and practice of sports training are offered to the students in order to make them qualified coaches or physical education teachers in the future.

 

Curricular Modules:

Sports Training includes Principles of Sport Studies, Sport Physiology, Sports Competitions and Treatment of Injury and First-aid in Sports as key courses on theories, Theories and Practice of Sports Training, Basics of Track and Field and Basics of Ball Games as key courses on practice. The optional courses provide the students with more relevant knowledge in sport studies and chances for internship.

 

Staff:

The strong faculty in Sports Training including 2 PhDs, 2 Masters and 3 professors. We have achieved great success in sports competitions and researches of sports training. Track and field, football, basketball, taekwondo are our strong sports.

 

Sports Arts (Undergraduate)

The programme of Sports Arts in Jiangxi Normal University was launched in 2008. Over the past years, this programme has formed its shape.

Objectives:

This programme aims to foster those who will be fully developed in terms of morality, intelligence, bodybuilding and aesthetics. They will master the fundamental theories and skills of sports arts, and will be able to work in multiple areas, such as arts producers, physical education teachers and scientific researchers.

 

 

Fulfillment by the Students:

1. The students should understand the connotations of Marxism, Leninism, Maoism and thoughts of China’s major political leaders; should be in pursuit of patriotism and collectivism; should take the responsibility of working hard to make China a strong and rich country, to make the Chinese nation a strong people.

2. The students should be with commitment with arts career, favorable morality; should have the sense of innovation; should have good status physically and mentally; should be well cultivated in arts.

3. The students should master fundamental theories and skills in sports performance.

4. The students should be familiar with the policies, strategies and regulations of physical education in China; should be aware of the trends of reformations and developments of sports arts.

5. The students should be proficient in motor skills and performance skills; should be qualified to supervise sports training, organize sports competitions and conduct physical education; should have the ability to carry out scientific research.

6. The students should master a foreign language and certain skills in commending a computer.

 

Disciplinary Orientations:

This programme aims to produce personnel who are able to perform both sports and arts. They will be equipped with the ability of educating, training, researching, composing, plotting and managing in sports arts, who are qualified to work in the educational system, community sport organizations, sports clubs, youth centers, as well as governmental organizations.

 

Curricular Modules:

The curricular modules in Sports Arts follow the pattern of Physical Education, in addition to a number of specialized training corses.

1. The general compulsory courses are designated by the university.

2. The major compulsory courses are tailored for the discipline of sports arts, which are essential, applicable and perspective.

3. The optional courses including sports that are popular among the mass, such as yoga, nutriology in sport, etc.

4. Various chances of internship with many sports clubs and organizations in Nanchang City are also provided to the students. They may even gain a job in those clubs after graduation.

Staff:

The strong faculty of Sports Arts includes 4 associate professors, 5 lecturers and 8 Masters, 1 professional coach and 1 international sports arts referee. Most of them are under 40 years old, who can greatly advance the development of Sports Arts in Jiangxi Normal University.

 

Career Prospect:

At present, the graduates of Sports Arts have a good career prospect. The can work as teachers in the primary and secondary schools, or as coaches in sports and fitness clubs, or even self-employed.

Martial Arts and Traditional Sports (Undergraduate)

The programme of Traditional Sports in Jiangxi Normal University was launched in 2009. It is the only programme in Jiangxi that can enroll specialized students. Since 2011, we recruit students from all over the country. After four years’ study, the students will be award a Bachelor’s degree. Over the past years, this programme has formed its shape.

 

Objectives:

This programme aims to foster those who will be fully developed in terms of morality, intelligence, bodybuilding and aesthetics. They will master the fundamental theories and skills of traditional sports, and will be able to work in multiple areas, such as physical education in schools, professional sports training, community sport sector and security.

 

Fulfillment by the Students:

1. The students should understand the connotations of Marxism, Leninism, Maoism and thoughts of China’s major political leaders; should be familiar with the policies, strategies and regulations of (physical) education in China; should be with commitment in the education career of traditional sports.

2. The students are offered a wide range of courses, so that they can master fundamental theories and skills in traditional sports.

3. The students should have the ability to teach, train, compete, research and manage in traditional sports, so as to stand for a job position in the future.

4. The students should have the ability to learn, practice and create; should have favorable ability of both oral and literally expression.

5. The students should be in pursuit of lifelong fitness and learning, healthy both physically and mentally; should have the ability to carry out date collection, analysis, process and application in relevant working areas.

 

Disciplinary Orientations:

The programme of Traditional Sports in Jiangxi Normal University is newly launched in 2011. We recruit specialized students from both patternized martial arts and free combat, dragon dance and lion dance. We highlight theories, practice and personal morality in the programme and aim to integrate theories into practice, traditional theories and modern sciences in the sphere of traditional sport.

Curricular Modules:

1. The general compulsory courses are designated by the university.

2. The major compulsory courses are tailored for the discipline of traditional sports, which are essential, applicable and perspective.

3. The optional courses including sports that are popular among the mass, such as dragon dance, lion dance, folk sports of Jiangxi, etc.

4. Various chances of internship with many sports clubs and organizations in Nanchang City are also provided to the students. They may even gain a job in those clubs after graduation.

 

Staff:

The strong faculty of Traditional Sports includes 1 professor, 7 associate professors, 2 lectures and 5 Masters and 4 Bachelors. Most of us are under 40 years old. We have chaired 1 national research funds and 6 ministerial or provincial research funds.

 

Career Prospect:

We do not have any graduates at the current stage, but we expect our future graduates to work in the educational system, sports clubs and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
